What Flies Our Kite - The Festive Edition
There’s something wonderfully comforting about this time of year. The twinkly lights, the cosy evenings, the familiar rituals we return to again and again. December invites us to slow down, savour the simple things and enjoy those small moments that make the season feel so special.
So, for our festive edition of What Flies Our Kite, we’re sharing a handful of things the Kite team are loving right now. From treasured family traditions to ways to give back this Christmas, we hope this inspires you.
Kite Team Christmas Traditions
Every family has its own little rituals, and we love hearing how our team celebrate the season. Here are a few favourites that might inspire you:
Bucks Fizz For Breakfast
Joss and her family start Christmas morning with a glass of Bucks Fizz.
Reggae and Caribbean Sausage Stuffing
Christmas wouldn’t be the same for Joss without reggae music turned up loud and her mum’s amazing Caribbean sausage stuffing.
Christmas Eve Milkshakes
Lauren’s family make ultimate milkshakes on Christmas Eve in personalised glasses from Etsy, instead of hot chocolate. Adult versions for over 18s!
A Christmas Day Sea Swim
Also from Lauren… far braver than most of us! A festive dip in the chilly Dorset sea has become a much-loved tradition.
White Elephant Gift Exchange
Libby’s family play this lively game each year. It’s all about fun, a little competitiveness and plenty of laughs as presents get swapped, traded and occasionally stolen.

Second-hand Book Under the Tree
Jo’s Christmas tree “gives” her family a carefully chosen second-hand book each year around teatime. A thoughtful and sustainable idea.
New Pyjamas on Christmas Eve
Katie and her family gift each other new PJs on Christmas Eve – matching ones are even better!
Lychee and Rose Martinis
Charlotte shakes up lychee and rose martinis for everyone throughout the festive break. This year she’s adding two new cocktails inspired by her trip to Key West - the Jungle Bird and Rum Runner. Christmas, but make it tropical.
Christmas Markets
Ben and Alina love wandering around a Christmas market. It’s lovely way to slow down, soak up the season and enjoy a little festive cheer with the people you love.

Christmas Decorations
Emma’s favourite Christmas tradition is buying a new Christmas tree decoration to add to her collection each year - unwrapping them at the start of December feels a bit like opening a box of memories.
Leaving Food for Santa and His Reindeer
Both Andrea and Roger’s favourite Christmas tradition is leaving treats out on Christmas eve with their children. Here’s instructions to make Kite’s Magical Reindeer Food.
St Nicholas - a German Tradition
Wiebke’s favourite Christmas tradition is St Nicholas, a much-loved tradition from Germany that brings an extra touch of festive excitement. On the 6th December, children carefully place their polished boots outside their door – they later find them filled with small treats.
Run, Run, Rudolph!
Ally’s favourite Christmas tradition is the Poole Parkrun on Christmas day that she does with her family. It’s an event where you can walk, jog or run a 5k. It’s a lovely mix of community spirit, fresh air and that little boost that makes the mince pies taste even better later on.
Festive Giving
This is a season of generosity, and we love finding ways to spread kindness. Here are a few ideas for how to give back:
Donating Warm Clothes
Donating outerwear, sturdy shoes and everyday essentials offer comfort and a little relief during what can be an tough time for many. Donate to your local community centre, place of worship, local charities, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and donation bins.
Volunteer This Christmas
Donating your time and effort through volunteering this Christmas can mean more than donating money.
A two-hour collection shift for Marie Curie raises £85 – visit the website to find a location to collect near you.
Crisis need volunteers to provide warmth, companionship and vital services to people facing homelessness at one of the toughest times of the year.
Pass on Toys and Books
Samaritans Purse is an international charity where you can give this Christmas.
Shop Small and Sustainable
Choosing to shop small and sustainable at Christmas brings a little extra goodness to the season. You can support small businesses, and tread a little lighter on the planet.
Donate to a Cause Close to Our Hearts - Bliss Premature Baby Charity
Until midday on 9th December every gift made via Bliss' Big Give Campaign page will be doubled.
We hope these ideas bring a little extra sparkle to your month. Whether you’re baking, watching films, helping others or simply taking a quiet moment to unwind, here’s to a season filled with kindness, connection and magic.
From all of us at Kite, wishing you a warm and wonderful Christmas.
